What is Ear Cropping?

Ear cropping is an elective surgical procedure that entails removing part of the external flaps of the ears. The ear cropping procedure is intended to cause the ears to stand up straight and pointed opposed to flopping over to the front or sides as in most dog breeds. The AKC (American Kennel Club) standards for shape, size, and style of cropped ears vary by breed for show dogs, but for non-show pets, these factors are mostly based on the preference of the owner.

Is Ear Cropping Dangerous?

Ear cropping is a major surgery that requires anesthesia, and the process of anesthesia is always accompanied by some risk. Most veterinarians recommend that puppies undergo the ear cropping procedure between 12 and 16 weeks of age for the best results in ear shape and stability, and while this young age is important for the flexibility of the ears’ growth, it also presents a greater risk during the anesthesia process. For this reason, here at Perrin-410, we require lab testing for your puppy prior to the surgical procedure to assure that red blood cell levels are balanced and that your puppy’s immune system and internal organs are going strong! During your puppy’s initial ear crop consultation, our ear-cropping expert will take you through the entire process step-by-step from lab testing to post-surgical bandaging so you’ll know what to expect from start to finish.
