Wellness and Preventative Care for Dogs

Keeping the tails wagging

Happy healthy dog

Wellness and preventive care is an essential part of keeping your best friend happy and healthy. For your dog’s best health, routine care includes:

Wellness Exams
Vaccinations/Immunizations
Flea, Tick, and Heartworm Prevention
Intestinal Parasite Exam
Dental Cleanings
Age Appropriate Blood Work
Baths and Nail Trims

Wellness Exams

Dogs should get regular preventative wellness check-ups, just like humans, to make sure they are staying healthy. Frequency of visits may depend on your dog’s age, but we recommend visits every 6 months to keep all immunizations, including boosters, up-to-date.

Vaccinations/Immunizations

We advocate for preventative immunizations to keep your dog from being susceptible to highly contagious illnesses. The core required vaccines are:

Rabies Vaccine: (given yearly or every 3 years) required by law to prevent the spread of Rabies.
DHLPP Vaccine: (given yearly and the Parvo vaccine is boostered in 6 months) a combo vaccine that protects against (D)distemper- extremely contagious virus, (H)hepatitis, (L) leptospirosis- contagious bacterium, (P)parainfluenza- highly contagious respiratory virus, and (P)parvovirus- extremely contagious virus, difficult to cure.
Bordetella: (given every 6 months) protects against kennel cough, a highly contagious bronchitis illness
Influenza: (given yearly) protects against the canine flu.

When you bring your dog in for vaccinations, you veterinarian will talk to you about your dog’s age and lifestyle to determine the most appropriate set of vaccinations.

Heartworm Prevention

Heartworms are spread through infected mosquitoes that transmit the larva into a pet. Heartworm prevention is an easy and affordable way to keep your dog protected. A heartworm 4DX test is required annually or when refilling or changing products. Our 4DX test is a comprehensive test that screens for Heartworms, Erlichia, Lymes, and Anaplasmosin which are known to be carried by ticks and can be life-threatening to dogs.  When you come in for your visit, your veterinarian will help you choose the right medication for your dog.

Flea and Tick Prevention

Especially in south Texas, flea, tick, and heartworm prevention is very important for your dog at all times of the year.  Fleas and ticks can reproduce quickly and wreak havoc on your dog. There are many forms of protection ranging from pills, to topical products. To find the one that works best for you, talk to your veterinarian.

Intestinal Parasite Exam

Intestinal parasite tests are recommended for all new dogs with re-checks every 6 months to check for many forms of intestinal parasites. Since intestinal parasites are zoonotic, it is recommended to be sure they are negative before introducing any other animals or kids at home. Due to the many types of intestinal parasites, if a dog is positive this helps determine which type of medication would be best to treat the infection.

Routine Dental Cleaning

Your dog’s dental health is very important for their overall health. Poor dental health can not only lead to dental issues like periodontal disease, but is can also effect major organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys.
To help you and your dog with preventative dental health, we offer a Healthy Mouth Dental Cleaning to fight plaque, tartar and bacteria and keep them healthy! We provide our clients with dental exams and estimates free of charge. To learn more about dental cleanings for your dog, click here.

Age Appropriate Blood Work

Routine blood work allows us to screen your dog for internal health issues. Because dogs age so much faster than humans, we recommend screenings every 6 months to help us identify abnormalities early.

Bath and Nail Trim

For hygiene and comfort, your dog should be bathed about once a month, but no more than every two weeks. Of course, you can always take care of bath time at home. We even sell our Perrin-410 dog shampoo over the counter.  Or, if you prefer, you can drop your fur-baby off with us and let us do the work! Bath-time with a nail trim, ear cleaning, and flea treatmet is only $20. We do require your dog to be up to date on core vaccines before we provide grooming services.
